The Bronx Zoo: Elephant House Roof
Replacement |

|
The copper roof of this New York City
Landmark (built in 1908) was in need of repair. Time was
tight. The project needed to be started immediately following
the Zoo's Holiday Light Show in
January and completed prior to the start of the Spring
season.
SEABOARD:
- Closely coordinated all work with the Zoo's animal
keepers, to ensure that the many animals who lived in the
House were kept safe
- Securely performed all work during the frigid winter
months, while the Zoo remained open to the public
- Removed the old copper roof, exposing the original terra
cotta roof tiles and rotted wooden battens, and then
painstakingly installed new sections of battens and new
interlocking copper panel segments. The shape of the Dome
roof required special care, artistry and
craftmanship
- Installed built-in gutters, with a wood trough,
copper-lined and hidden from view by decorative terra cotta
cornices
- Restored the Elephant House roof to its original state
of beauty and grandeur, worthy of its stately tenants.
